About TED

TED is a nonprofit organisation devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It began as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. Since then its scope has expanded to include science, business, the arts and the global issues facing our world. TED believes passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world. TED offers free knowledge and inspiration from the world’s most inspired thinkers, and also a community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other.

The annual TED Conference held in Long Beach and simulcast in Palm Springs is the heart of TED. More than a thousand people attend to listen to the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers. Over four days, 50 speakers give an 18-minutes long talk of their life and many other shorter presentations, including music and comedy performances. There are no breakout groups. Everyone shares the same experience. The talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and Gordon Brown.

Today, TED is best thought of as a global community. It’s a community welcoming people from every discipline and culture who have just two things in common: they seek a deeper understanding of the world, and they hope to turn that understanding into a better future for us all. TED’s initiatives have grown to include the annual TEDGlobal conference in Oxford UK; the award-winning TEDTalks video site; the TED Open Translation Project which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts of TEDTlaks; the inspiring TED Fellows which helps world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community; TEDx program which offers individuals or groups a way to organise independent, TED-like events around the world; and the annual TED Prize where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action.

TED2012, “Full Spectrum,” will be held February 27 to March 2, 2012, in Long Beach, California, with the TEDActive simulcast in Palm Springs, California.

About TEDx

x = independently organised event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised, subject to certain rules and regulations.

The content and design of each TEDx event is unique and developed independently, but all TEDx events have several features in common:

+ TED’s celebrated format

A suite of short, carefully prepared talks, demonstrations and live performances on a wide range of subjects to foster learning, inspiration and wonder and to provoke conversations that matter.

+ TEDTalks videos

A minimum of two pre-recorded talks from the acclaimed TEDTalks video series (these talks are available free on TED.com)

+ Bias-free programming

Lack of any commercial, religious or political agenda.
